## Overview
> ⚠️ **Remote Assets display on pbs.org only. They do not surface on apps or over-the-top devices such as Roku and Apple TV.**
Remote Assets are web objects that can surface external content such as webpages or static images on your website and are referred to as Related Content in your video asset. Remote Assets are a great way to provide depth to your content by providing viewers with additional related subject matter. Remote Assets can render on a video asset page in two ways:
- **Episode Link** - Title and URL
- **Learn More Promo** - Title, URL, description, and image.
We currently have a manual process in place to remove Remote Assets five to seven years after they are created. This is to ensure we are able to clean up stale or unmanaged content, and prevent access to sites which have unknowingly changed domain ownership. Eventually, we plan to automate this process and will update the documentation accordingly.
Creating a remote asset and associating it with a video asset is done in two separate places in the Media Manager console. Remote assets are created in the Remote Assets section which can be accessed from the Remote Assets link in the left side navigation menu. Remote Assets are associated with a video asset from the actual video asset.
## How to create a Remote Asset

### Pull Site Info feature
The *Pull Site Info* feature is optional and saves you time by automatically pulling in the following three metadata elements from the **destination site**, if present, and populating your remote asset:
1. Title
2. Description
3. Image URL
The **destination site** is the site with which your remote asset is associated. For instance, if the destination site is *The Master Gardener* and the destination site URL is [https://www.pbs.org/show/modern-gardener/](https://www.pbs.org/show/modern-gardener/), your remote asset will pull in available metadata at that URL.
If metadata is available and pulled in from the destination site, customizations that you made to the Title, Short Description, and Image field when creating your remote asset are overwritten by the destination site’s metadata. Be sure to double check those fields before publishing.
If the description that is pulled from the destination site metadata is longer than 100 characters, it is truncated and you must manually edit it to fit the 100 character maximum requirement for remote assets.
See step 3.2 in the instructions below to learn how to assign your destination site and begin pulling metadata in to your remote asset automatically. Remember that metadata is only pulled in to your remote asset if it is present in the destination site.
### Create your Remote Asset
- From the left side navigation menu, click **Remote Assets** (Figure 1).

- On the right side of the page, click **Create Remote Asset** (Figure 2).

- Click the **Franchise** and/or **Show dropdown menu** and click the **franchise and/or show** with which the asset should be associated (Figure 3.1).
- In the URL textbox, type the **full URL** of the** destination site **to which the remote asset link should link (Figure 3.2).
- After entering a **valid URL** (and clicking anywhere outside the field), the **Pull Site Info** button displays and is enabled (Figure 3.3). The **[Pull Site Info](https://docs.pbs.org/space/MM/5343943/Remote++Assets#Pull-Site-Info-feature)** button automatically populates the title, description, and image URL with the elements from the destination site metadata, if present. *** ***
- In the Title textbox, type a **title **for your remote asset (Figure 3.4). ***Maximum characters: 256, including spaces. ***
- This field is overwritten if you clicked the *Pull Site Info *button and there is metadata available that is different from what you entered here.
- In the Short Description textbox, type a **short description** of your remote asset (Figure 3.5). ***Maximum characters: 100, including spaces. ***
- This field is overwritten if you click the *Pull Site Info* button and there is metadata available that is different from what you entered here.

- Click the **Choose button** next to the Image textbox to **select an image from your computer** (Figure 4.1) or type the **full URL to the image** in the textbox provided (Figure 4.2).
- The image added here is overwritten if you click the Pull Site Info button and the destination site metadata provides a different image from what you added here.
- The Tags textbox accepts **keywords** that will help viewers find your remote asset (Figure 4.3). Tap the **Enter key** on your keyboard to enter each word or phrase.

- If you clicked **Pull Site Info**, doublecheck the accuracy and completeness of the fields that were automatically populated (Figure 5.1).
- Click **Preview **to preview the URL uploaded image** **(Figure 5.2). A locally uploaded image cannot be previewed.
- When finished, click **Save** (Figure 5.3).

- A notification displays at the top of the page, indicating that the page has been saved (Figure 6.1).
- After saving your page, a new section called *Relationships* displays at the bottom of the screen (Figure 6.2).
- A Relationship is an association between a remote asset and a video asset in the form of [related content](https://docs.pbs.org/space/MM/5343793/Assets#Related-Content). The Relationships section displays all videos that include the remote asset you are currently viewing. Only existing relationships appear in this section. If the remote asset has no existing relationships, you must add them at the [video asset](https://docs.pbs.org/space/MM/5343793/Assets#How-to-create-a-video-asset) level in a special or a season.

## How to search for remote assets
Search for remote assets by using the filters at the top of the page or use the keyword search feature on the right side of the page.
### Search using filters
- Click the **dropdown menus** at the top of the Remote Assets page to filter results by Franchise, Show or link type (Episode or Learn More). You can select either Franchise or Show, not both.

- Results that fit the selected filters are returned (Figure 2).

### Search by keyword
Search for a remote asset using keywords from its title or description.
- Type **keywords from the remote asset's title or description** in the search textbox in the upper right side of the screen (Figure 1).

- Results containing the keywords in either the title or description, or both, are returned (Figure 2).
